How Can You Tell If Your Cabinets Are Real Wood?

First, even particle board, chip board and MDF board are all made from "real" wood.  It's just not made from solid pieces of wood big enough to make a complete door or door front.  They are made up the of ground up or chipped pieces of wood that are left over from making solid wood boards.  That's a very "green" thing, because it makes use of what would otherwise be wasted.   So, when some manufactures use "all wood cabinets" in their advertising, they are being truthful.  That being said, non-of these products are "bad" but if you want the honest-to-goodness look and feel of real, solid wood cabinets, those products won't do.

So, how do you tell if your kitchen cabinets are real, solid wood?  There are several methods that are sure to let you know.

  • Remove a hinge and check the screw hole.  If the hole is full of particles of wood, it's not solid wood.
  • Check the inside and outside of a door.  If the grain pattern matches, then it's real, solid wood.
  • Check for repeating grain patterns on the doors and the sides of the cabinets.  If they repeat, it's not solid wood.
  • Check for labels that identify the cabinet as a solid wood product.

We use only the best possible materials in our kitchen and bath cabinets.  Our doors and face frames are made of solid wood species.  Our cabinet boxes and shelves are furniture grade plywood.  Our cabinet construction exceeds all requirements.  You can be confident of quality when you purchase from us.

How To Clean Older Kitchen Cabinets

After years of faithful service, your kitchen cabinets may need a good cleaning.  How do you do this without harming the surface?  It takes time, but you can do a great job if you have the patience.

  1. Wash them with a nice mild soap and water with a soft cloth.  Take your time and do one area at a time and don't get the cabinet too wet for too long.

  2. Check for excess wax. It's a good idea to use a good wood cleaner from a home improvement store for this.  Make sure you follow the directions closely.

  3. Dry the cabinets completely using a soft, dry cloth.

  4. Let the cabinets sit over night.

  5. The next day, using a wood polish like orange oil, wipe the cabinets and doors with wood polish, carefully following the instructions.

  6. Remove any excess polish with a dry, soft cloth.

Cleaning and polishing your cabinets will give your old cabinets a fresh start, another "green" thing to do.
