Standard Cabinet Sizes

It's nice to know that there is an industry standard for kitchen cabinet dimensions.  It makes replacing your existing kitchen cabinets much easier.  True, if you have custom, built-in cabinets, this may not help, but on the average, most kitchen cabinets follow these standards.  Typically, cabinets are built in increments of 3" starting at 9" wide (9", 12", 15", 18", 21" 24", etc).  This is different from custom built cabinets that can vary by as little as 1/16" to fit a space perfectly.  With standard size cabinets, spacers and fillers are used along walls to take up the left-over spaces and make the lines continuous.  Then, moldings are added to give a more custom look.

Base kitchen cabinet dimensions

Base cabinets are 24" deep.  This gives a 1 1/2" overhang for a standard dimension countertop.  Base cabinets are 34 1/2" tall, so that the surface of a standard countertop (1 1/2" thick) ends up of 36" high.

Wall kitchen cabinet dimensions

Wall cabinets vary much more than base cabinets.  They come in two standard depths, 12" and 24".  They also come in varying heights, 12", 15", 18", 30", 36" and 42".  Not every line of kitchen cabinets will include every height or width, but you can usually mix sizes and spacers to make a perfect fit, including cabinets over microwaves and refrigerators.  Custom cabinets, again, can fit any space perfectly.

Oven columns and pantry cabinets

Taller cabinets, like oven columns and pantries, can be from 12" to 27" deep and are usually 84",90" and 96" tall and 12" to 36" wide.  The taller kitchen cabinets may come as two cabinets that stack one on top of the other.  Any gap at the ceiling is hidden with decorative molding.

Bath cabinets and vanities

Bathroom base cabinets (vanities) are shorter in height, usually 28 1/2" to 30" tall and 21" deep.  The wall cabinets can be as thin as 9" to 12" deep, depending upon the manufacturer.  Otherwise, the wall cabinets are the same as those in the kitchen.

Kitchen Cabinets Appliance Dimensions

It's important to know exactly what the dimensions are for your appliances when laying out your new kitchen floor plan.  There are several industry standard sizes to choose from for each type of appliance.
  • Stoves (Free standing): 30" - 42" - 46"- 48" wide and typically 25" deep.
  • Microwave Ovens: 30" wide.  Spacers on either side can help center the microwave over wider stoves.
  • Vented and un-vented hoods: 30" just like the microwave.
  • Drop-in Stoves: 30" wide.  These are stoves that fit between cabinets but do not reach the floor.
  • Refrigerators: 30" to 49" wide and 66" and taller.  Make sure you have room to open the door(s).
  • Cook Tops: 30" to 36" wide
  • Trash Compactors: 15" and 18" wide
  • Built in Ovens: There are many different sizes.  You may have to adjust the oven opening in oven columns to fit them by cutting the opening larger or trimming around gaps.  This is typical.
